Along with the references to rap as our current equivalent to rock, I think that another currently popular music genre deserves consideration. As far as the types of music associated with black artists and consumers, R&B is certainly influential. Not only is it itself influenced by rock and roll, it is supposed to be a sort of modern equivalent to one of the genres that lead into rock and roll.

My related question is this: If rap is, as some of the other posters have mentioned, purported to create the same sort of social challenge that rock and roll did, should we consider R&B as having a similar influence? Is all that it takes for a musical genre to be a revolution for it to be associated with black artists? Or is it the subject/style of the songs?
