Going Native in LA

While reading the section on Disneyland in "Popular Culture in the Age of White Flight", I was forcibly reminded of Huhndorf's discussion of going native. Disney's "Frontierland" provided the perfect opportunity to "go native" for pleasure, and situated this experience within it's fantastical wonderland, further rendering this tradition acceptable and harmless. Disney even purportedly 'employed' "20 full blooded braves, representing 16 tribes" (p 133). This assurance of authenticity and "sampling" of various tribal cultures also reminds me of the throughway at the late 19th century World's Fairs. It would be interesting to look further into this experience of going native within a Californian fantasy-land and explore its historical roots and "inspiration".
