I thought All Shook Up was an interesting exploration of the importance of categories to our human experience. Be it music or people, it helps us organize the world we live in.
The rock'n'roll music industry (and the days leading up to it) represents a zone where such categories in music and people converge. Based on whether the artist was white or black, the potential for his/her music and its genre (R&B or country/pop) was determined. The crossover market is a promising result of such mixing, with the potential for social change.
However, can it be said to break barriers or create new ones? (Such as Patricia J. Williams commented on Barack Obama: first he was the new limitless potential, but then the media quickly found new labels for him.) Again, it is interesting how the mass media heightens consciousness but at the same time must be able to communicate to the population-- which often resorts to new categories and labels.
