We were talking in class about how we each learned about the civil rights movement, which started me thinking about how children should be taught about the civil rights movement. So, my discussion question for the week is - is it better for children to learn about the intricacies of the civil rights movement (for example, Malcolm X) and to learn that even today, African Americans haven't reached full equality, in order to combat "inferential racism?" Or, is it better for children to learn the simplified, watered down version, because they grow up with a clear idea of what's right and what's wrong? My contemporary link is to the "Cosby Show." I grew up on this show and loved the characters. This show provides great African American role models on TV doing "normal," family things. However, does this program ignore inherent racial issues alive in society today, pretending that they don't exist?
