In Popular Culture in the Age of White Flight, Eric Avila states, “Popular culture has somewhat different connotations than mass culture, but within the history of the United States, both implicate the market as the mediator between cultural producers and the consuming public. The problem with popular culture—especially in the Southern California context—is not its definition but its interpretation. How the market has shaped the regional culture is the subject of much debate and some distortion” (13). I believe this quote is important to what the purpose of the course is bout and the discussions we have had so far in class. The author demonstrates how Disneyland and other forms of popular culture formatted this idealized notion of “white identity.” Not only does Disneyland portray this idea of whiteness, but Marvel Superheroes as well. Just as all of the Princesses and Prince’s in Disneyland are white, all of the superheroes (batman, superman, wonder woman, etc) are white as well. How does the market play a role in perpetuating this idea of whiteness? How do these images presented by the market affect the psychological and identity development of minority children and there sense of self?
