This is a BBC news article about the Chinese ban of "Memoirs of a Geisha" due to a Chinese actress playing the role of a Japanese geisha. This casting decision (by an American director) angered the Chinese, because they perceive geisha to be prostitutes. Furthermore, this is an example of the American creation of an all-encompassing "cultural category of Oriental Otherness" (115) that Robert G. Lee describes in "Orientals." Even today, we are less concerned about whether a person is specifically Chinese, Japanese, or Malaysian, but simply fit her into our definition of the Oriental Other.
