Although “going native” depicts the process of Americans performing the culture of Native Americans, Huhndort demonstrates how the act of “going native” was intended to define and renegotiate Americans identity and history. It was meant to suppress Europeans violent history and their ideal of equality and freedom. Through the reflection of popular culture and media, Americans used the World Fairs to depict Native Americans as being primitive and savages. These negative stereotypes justified Americans colonization of the Native Americans and progress into modernity. How do these early conceptions and images of Native Americans impact how they are portrayed in the media today?
