The Sandlot

Such a great movie! Right? The readings from this week reminded me of the Latino character in The Sandlot, Benny Rodriguez.

Here is a montage of pictures of Benny from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRq3jNdcgm8&feature=related

And here's one of the original theatrical trailers:

Benny Rodriguez is the best player on the kid's baseball team because of his speed, and he is initially the only one who is nice to the new kid in town, Scotty. Benny is also the only one at the end who becomes a professor baseball player, playing for the LA Dodgers. He is kind of the star of the movie, as he is the one who is chased by the "Beast" in the famous scene from the movie. He is a strong and in-depth character, who is not stereotyped and isn't really racialized - other than the fact that his last name is Rodriguez, he doesn't stand out as a Latino character.

I also came across this website, about Latinos in major league baseball: http://www.latinobaseball.com/mlb-hcountry.html

What does his character and also this website say about Latinos in baseball that goes against the reading that we read?
